Personality:

Eddie is a neurotic little shit. A victim of Munchhausen by Proxy, his mother has hammered into his head that he's delicate and sickly and needs many different medications to combat his myriad illnesses. As a result, he often sounds more like a middle aged man than a 13 year old boy. He's terrified of everything. Not only the obvious and real threats of bullies and whatever is making kids go missing in Derry, but of absurd things like the idea of getting AIDS through a hangnail. It's no wonder he spends most of his days hyperventilating and taking deep puffs off of his inhaler. It also explains why, when IT shows him his worst fear, it appears as a leper. Eddie describes it as "a walking infection."

There are a few moments when his fear of the unknown and of the possibility of disease and infection come into question. Moments when his mother's influence is shoved aside and he works on sheer instinct. One is when he and Stan run right into the river to help Ben, without any thought to what might be in the water or what diseases Ben might be harboring (he doesn't start thinking of that until their ride into town). He also doesn't seem worried about dirt and disease when joining in on the apocalyptic rock war. The biggest moment, though, was when he dropped his pill container on the street. Unconcerned with the amount of dirt and germs on the road, he picks up all of the pills and drops them right back into his pill container. He doesn't grasp that he's not really sick until the pharmacist's daughter tells him that all of his medications are placebos. All of the pieces fall into place and he realizes that his mother has been holding him hostage with all her talk about him being sick.

His neuroticism has made him a prime target for teasing from the bullies in town and from his friends. His best friend, Richie Tozier, in particular. It's a wonder that Richie and Eddie remain friends. The two are oil and water. As much as Richie absolutely disgusts him, Eddie really has Richie to thank for him coming out of his shell at all. He pushes Eddie to the limits of his paranoia and beyond. If it wasn't for all of his friends, Eddie wouldn't ever get out from under the firm thumb of his mother. Of course, he helps them almost as much as they help him. He and Stan take on the roles of the parents of the group. Stan with his Boy Scout sincerity and caution, and Eddie with his paranoia and first aid knowledge. It was this knowledge that helped them bond with Ben when he literally tumbled into their lives.

Underneath the fear, worry, neurosis, and unhealthy attachment to his mother lies unwavering loyalty to his friends and a hidden bravery that even he had no idea existed. Some of that loyalty stems from the fact that he really doesn't have any other friends, but he'll literally face hell to help the friends he has. Given the chance to fight back against the bullies with the rest of the "Losers" he not only joined in, he leaped into the river, getting soaked and making himself the closest target. When it came down to it, covered in blood and muck and who knows what else, he faced down that clown and helped beat it into submission with the rest of them. That loyalty was only brought into question once: after his arm was broken by IT. His fear combined with the oppressive influence of his mother pushed him to stop seeing his friends. However, the moment he learned that Beverly had been taken by IT, he told off his mother and ran off to help save her.

Eddie may be a neurotic, hypochondriac little shit, but he has a heart of gold, and he loves his friends more than he hates disease.

Do you want to volunteer to be part of the first murder?: No

Any other questions or concerns?:
Eddie has a fanny-pack with an assortment of medications (including his all important inhaler). That will need to come with him. Also, he will be coming from some time post movie (probably after his cast is taken off). While he becomes braver and realizes his medications are "gazebos" (placebos) near the end of the movie, it's canon that the events of the movie are forgotten over time by the Losers Club, so it's plausible for him to revert back to his hypochondriac ways.
